Tenuate acts on the brain to stimulate the sympathetic nervous system. It is believed that the appetite suppression seen with these drugs is a combination of this central action and other unknown effects of the drug on metabolism. Tenuate is also known as an anorexiant (which simply means it causes a "lack of appetite").
Take Tenuate on an empty stomach, once daily, 30-60 minutes before breakfast. Do not increase your dose or take it more often than prescribed because this drug can be habit forming. Also, if used for a longer period of time, do not suddenly stop this medication without first consulting your doctor. This medication is usually taken for 8 to 12 weeks.
